Hi,

Before we move onto news about the New Year - a short glance back to 2011. Both Janet and I prepared our December Christmas Menu for family and guests, and honestly it was a rave - they picked the turkey carcasses clean, no problem about using left overs! The Pork Terrine and Pavlova Roulade also hit all the right spots.

Most of us, as part of our New Year's resolutions, are determined to shed a few kilos and to keep them off! We all want to eat healthier every day and avoid the fast-food trap. Professor Tim Noakes and his wife, Marilyn, visited our garden on open day. He believes in a diet high in protein with natural fats - but very little, carbohydrates and sugar. He recommended a book 'Good Calories, Bad Calories: fats, carbs and the controversial science of diet and health' by Gary Taubes. I am busy reading the book and will keep you posted, so far, a lot of what I am reading makes sense.

On a personal level I had a really good rest this holiday. The last two years have had their challenges. 2010 brought my husband's illness followed by the back operation in 2011, which, by the way, was a great success. We did not go away over the holidays but enjoyed Cape Town, our garden and long walks along the beach with the dogs. I treated myself to a juice extractor for Christmas. Now we start every morning with a mixture of fresh vegetable and fruit juice. I will give some recipes in March when there will be one of these juice extractors up for grabs as a stunning prize.

This month's menu could not be easier, healthier or more delicious. A casual braai menu with plenty of vegetables, a little chicken and a delicious Mango Mousse with Yoghurt. Do put it to the test, even the hardiest meat eaters will succumb.

February is Valentine's month! Delight and seduce your love with the best ever Black Forest Cake with Chocolate Shards. Every now and again one must treat oneself to something utterly decadent and delicious especially on Valentine's day!

For the kids - a Vienna Bake that the whole family will enjoy.

Our team have lots of energy and ideas for the New Year. Stay with us and your reputation as a cook and hostess can only notch up.

Civilized man cannot live without cooks.
He may live without books, what is knowledge but grieving?
He may live without hope, what is hope but deceiving?
He may live without love, what is passion but pining?
But where is the man that can live without dining?

Owen Meredith

Warm regards and good cooking!
